The Academy Awards are one of the world's most-watched red
carpet spectacles (along with the Met Gala, of course). The 94th Academy
Awards, which will be held on March 27, will undoubtedly feature a slew of
great fashion moments. Because stylists frequently save their best dresses and
outfits for last, Hollywood's top stars are anticipated to walk the physical
red carpet in their most spectacular appearances. In anticipation of the
approaching event, Vogue has compiled a list of some of the finest Oscar gowns
of all time.
This ultimate list of our best Oscar fashion moments, chosen
by our editors (past and current), revisits several memorable ensembles. Janelle
Monáe in a caped Ralph Lauren gown last year was a fan favorite, as was Lupita
Nyong'o in a sky-blue Prada gown in 2014 when the actress was nominated for 12
Years a Slave. Nicole Kidman's surprising Balenciaga halter dress with a
dramatic bow embellishment, which she wore in 2007, was another stunner. And
who can forget Charlize Theron's gilded Gucci gown from 2004, when she
collected Best Actress for Monster looking every inch the Hollywood star?
Many of the choices are also some of the Oscars' more
surprising fashion moments, such as Céline Dion's reverse Christian Dior
tuxedo, Björk's Marjan Pejoski swan dress, and Cameron Diaz's slightly bohemian
Emanuel Ungaro Couture gown. Throwback classics include Barbra Streisand's
transparent jumpsuit by Arnold Scaasi, worn in 1969, and Salma Hayek's Armani
ensemble in 1997, replete with a tiara.
